The Recording Process

1) Get In Touch

Thinking of recording, or would just like some information out of curiosity? You can get in touch with us via our “Get In Touch” page, or alternatively complete one of the contact forms which can be found at the bottom of most pages across the website, or email info@cobramusic.wales. COBRA Music Studios are specialists when it comes to Choir Recording, Brass Band Recording and Orchestral Recording across Wales and England.

2) Discussion

Once you have made initial contact, we can start to discuss your requirements and what works best for your ensemble. This includes things like if you would like CDs, dates that you are thinking of recording on and potential venues. Once we work out what your ensemble are looking for, we send you a quotation which includes all of the points that we have discussed.

3) Arrangements

Once you have read over the quotation, if you choose to go ahead with the recording package, we send you a written contract. With our three part payment plan, you secure your booking with a deposit of 25%, followed by a further 50% when you receive the first mixes after the recording and the final 25%, when you receive the CDs (if ordered).

4) Pre-Recording

Before the recording day, we find out what tracks are going to be recorded by your ensemble. We like to get an idea of the artwork that you would like for the album (if applicable). This means that when the recording is done, the turn around time is as quick as possible for you. Ahead of the session, a schedule for the day(s) is also created with each of the pieces being recorded in mind - this is created alongside your musical team.

Where possible, we like to be able to visit the recording venue ahead of the recording day, not only does it give us a chance to see the space you will be recording in, it will mean we can have a coffee and a chat about everything in person with you! If we can not visit the recording venue, we will run through checks with you on the venue that you are thinking of recording in to make sure that it is recording friendly!

5) Recording Day

On the day of recording, we generally arrive at the venue, up to two hours before your ensemble arrive. This allows us plenty of time to setup all of our equipment. Recording is usually done in sections of around 3 tracks (around an hour), before taking a comfort break. We expect to record between 8-12 tracks in one days recording, with additional days recording available as part of your booking. The amount of pieces recorded can vary greatly and we will speak with the musical team about this in the booking process.

On the day, plenty of water will be provided for the choir and the day runs at a pace that everyone is happy with. A schedule is created ahead of the recording with your musical team so everyone knows approximate timings, and when everyone can expect a well earned lunch break! We want everyone to have a fantastic day and one to remember.

6) Post Production

After the recording day, we bring all the files back to our studio in Newport, where we begin the post production. This consists of mixing and mastering. During the post production stages, members of the musical team have the option to attend a mixing day once a draft mix has been completed for each of the pieces, or if it’s not convenient, we will send the mixed files via CD or online each step of the way. Once the first mixes have been received, you then have the option to send back revision notes with any mix amendments, should you desire.

When we have the final mix approvals, we then master the files and prepare for the duplication stage (if applicable). If CDs are included in the package, then the artwork is also finalised in this stage.

6) Delivery

Once the CD units have been produced, we send any CDs via recorded courier delivery (if applicable). All of your final files will be available from our online storage for you to access and share at any point.
